cruise west to japan; optional tokyo
Husband who has limited mobility and I planning trip on cruise west to japapn on Spirit of Oceanus. Anybody taken this trip?
Also, thinking of bullet train to Tokyo. What is train like? What is Tokyo like? Worth the extra money? Thanks, Helen |
What is the train like - brillant,
what is Tokyo like - brillant, Worth the extra money - yes. I've been to Japan many times, and will continue to go back, the bullet train is very comfortable. However, in some of the larger stations there can be a fair amount of walking. Will your cruise end in Yokohama or a port nearby Tokyo, or do you just have a day in port? |
I should clarify, there are lots of trains in Japan and I'm referring to the bullet train.

We end trip in Osaka and would take train from there to Tokyo. you mentioned a lot of walking. We would have tour of city in Tokyo. I wonder if there would be alot of walking there.

If you end in Osaka, you may want to consider going to Kyoto, the historic sights there are worth seeing. From Kyoto I'd then travel to Tokyo, assuming you haven't been to Japan.
If you know which sights you want to visit, maybe fodorites can advise how much walking will be involved. |
What is train like?

Japan is a jewel in Asia waiting for you to explore. Please do some research and come back with more specific questions. Aloha! |
I think Japan in general and Tokyo in particular is a fantastic place to visit. However, the OP's mention of "limited mobility" raises a flag for me.
Getting around in Tokyo, or getting between cities, always requires a fair bit of walking, and often includes stairs. That also goes for many of the sites in a city such as Kyoto. |
