Anyone flown Cathay Pacific recently? I've never flown them before; I'm a died in the wool EVA fan. But the price is right SFO-BKK-SFO $957 with a 6 month return.

WE took CP from JFK to Singapore in March. We went Business Class outbound and Coach on the return, The Business seats are almost like beds but a bit tight even for someone 5ft. 10" but adequate. Coach seats pitch well so the difference in a window set is not that great. We found the service only fair basically inattentive but once you got their attention they respoded to your needs. Food in both cabins was adequate at best. Planes were clean and took off on time. We found Thai Air premium economy a bit better than Cathay Business with better service abd food.

I fly CX alot, I have to say their flat bed business class seats are one of the worst in the industry, no arm rests, narrow seats, uncomfortable seats, I could go on, but won't> CX's service is good overall, I fly CX without hesitation. Never been on EVA so can't compare EVA to CX.

Lori i am a died in the wool EVA fan too, i have flown cathay too (Both airlines in Biz and also elite on Eva) for the money EVA is a winner but the service on CX is good. If the price is a winner over EVA go for it, but if the price is the same stick with trusty EVA

CP is a good solid airline. Better than US domestic carriers. Not as good as Singapore or Thai. We flew coach from JFK-BKK and it was a comfortable series of flights. No hestitaion at all.

You could pop up to Hong Kong at the end of September.

Cathay Pacific is CX, CP is the now defunct Canadian Airlines.

I agree SQ is better than CX. I'd rate TG as similar to CX.

offwego, CX also has an All Asia Pass, if you'd like to visit more than just BKK, look at this, there are some restrictions, so read the fine print before deceiding if this product is for you.

IMO for economy the service is pretty much the same. For comfort Cathay have wider seats but less pitch on their long haul air crafts. I would just go with the lowest price.

korean beats SQ in coach, imo

I am a EVA fan also, but I'm trying to book BKK for Sept and it is $1700-1900 for premimun evergreen class from Houston. I paid $1049 in Feb. I'm looking at Thai air LA to BKK for a little less money and I get my Continental miles. I'll be watching here for more ideas.

I am an American who has been living and working in Taiwan for over 3 yrs. And I only fly Cathay Pacific. Their inflight and ground service is super. I only travel twice a yr. but the Taiwan ground service manager always greets me by name. I have flow both coach and bus. and think both are great. I even flew them to Rome this yr...same wonderful service. (And I use to fly for AA 30 yrs. ago so I am very picky.)

CX has the unique shell seat in coach on their longhaul aircraft that nobody else uses. The seats don't recline; instead the seatback cushion slides down a bit and the seat cushions slides forward a bit. Those who don't like to recline their seats much love it; while those who're used to reclining their seats all the time may not.

Lori I have never flown EVA but Cathay are "solid" as someone said above. I would not hesitate to use them especially when they have a great price!


rkkwan, Qantas actually use the same type of seats as Cathay on their A380's. At least they feel very similar & when I saw them I commented that they were the same as the Cathay seats.

I don't think so. Looking at Qantas' own website, their economy seats on the A380 actually recline like any other economy seat on other airlines. Not so with CX's.

OK I'm taking Cathay to SFO in October and then coming back here in November on China Airlines ($941 RT SFO-PHN-SFO)

I'll no doubt have opinions of both and let you know how it goes. I'm not thrilled about an 8 hour layover in Taipei (possibly asia's worst airport) going back stateside, but I am thrilled with the price so I reckon I'll just have to suck it up.

EVA (my fave) is $1250 for the same flight, sadly.

I have decided to go with Thai Air in Sept. The EVA, which I love and have flown several times, was $1750 at time of booking for Evergreen Deluxe. I paid $1100 in Feb and never have paid more than $1300. Thai Air was $1642 for their premium class. I am looking forward to the non-stop LAX-BKK. I also hate the Taipai airport. It looks like the Thai air seats are a little wider than EVA, but I can only have 50 pound luggage instead of the 61# on EVA. My travel agent says the EVA is high because of the Shaighai expo. We'll see when we go in Feb.

Are those rates on Continental regular economy or premium economy?

EVA service is better than Thai. Flight attendants tend to disappear after the meal service from LAX-BKK. And they always seem a bit grumpy too. For the $100 difference, I would have stuck with EVA.

Stitch you probably have about 7 hours less travel time with Thai & save a few $ it is worth it for the time alone to me.

We just bought tickets LAX-PHN-LAX yesterday on EVA for $1071 in October. It was the best deal we could find for the specific dates we needed. I thought the fare was "ok" too, plus there's no long layover (longest is 3 hrs in Taipei) and we only change planes once.
The downside? A 5 hour ride to Siem Reap on arrival. We're not flying because of cost and baggage restrictions (we'll probably have our full baggage allowance used to bring items donated to the PLF).

Re:Cathay Pacific-David and I have flown them a number of times in the past to BKK and always thought they were one of the better airlines.
