Hi, All:
I live just outside Cambridge. In addition to the larger hotels in Boston/Cambridge and in outlying towns convenient to roadways (Waltham, etc), there are some local B&Bs. They are often expensive on peak weekends but sometimes more reasonable. Here is one that was quite charming when we put relatives up here a few years ago: http://www.acambridgehouse.com/index.htm They got BBC promotion a number of years ago so it tended to draw an international crowd at least at that time. For those of you who know Cambridge, it is on Mass Ave about halfway between Harvard Square and Porter Square. It is not in the same part of Cambridge as Kendall/MIT but transfer between them is quite easy. If interested, you can email them for rates for that week-end. I am not yet sure what else is happening in Cambridge that week-end to drive lodging demand, but happily it is not Head-of-the-Charles weekend (I checked.) There are other litle places tucked around Harvard Square. For those who are driving rather than using public transportation/taxis, there is also a sweet little place just outside Arlington Center where I put my parents up two years ago -- the Governor Brackett House on Route 60/Pleasant Street. Caution: it was for sale but still seems to be in operation. My parents found it charmibng. This readership probably knows more about my own hometown than I do though so I'll stop there. Good luck! |
Thanks,Carol for the airfare info, but I got my ticket months ago. I'll be staying at the Hotel at MIT again, too. I love the hotel and how more convenient can it be since the GTG is there. Plus, the food at the hotel is delicious. See you soon...like B4 the GTG...August...BK... Happy Travels!

Yes, BKK it is, guenmai. I look forward to getting together there. I'll be in the city from August 30 (I arrive 11:30 pm night before) until my flight home on Sept 7. I think I'll be staying at the Grand President on soi 11, but could meet just about anyplace!!

Great,Carol. We can do lunch somewhere. Maybe Sonnies on Sukhumvit soi 39...the Japanese restaurant that's not really Japanese...owned by Sonnie whose Japanese and worked in a steakhouse in Tennesee and his Thai wife Oil. Great food...or Tamarind... vegetarian restaurant owned by the French female chef...fabulous food up the soi from Otto Bei's German Bakery/Deli. We'll figure it out when we're there... Happy Travels!

guen---what soi for tamarind? thanks
|
Bob...soi 20. Remember, I reported on that one on my "Siam Ocean World" thread. You can pull it up and read my review. Happy Travels!

BTW, I posted a lunch suggestion for BKK on the Aug/Sept in BKK thread. I was printing some "fodorites" photos to carry with me to HNL and BKK, from the BOS GTG in Oct of 05. Lots of fond memories... can't wait to "do" this GTG once again this year! Carol Carol |
i too posted a luncheon suggestion for you guys in aug/sept...
bob |
ttt to put it on the front page
|
time to bring this back to the top to start people thinking again about putting it in their date books...
should i start a fresh thread next month to try to attract some others?? i will also post again on europe and other places |
Some of you who are going to the Boston gtg might be interested in trying this new (and already on Conde Nast's hot list) restaurant in Cambridge called "Om":
http://www.omrestaurant.com |
Making the ultimate sacrifice for the good of fellow Fodorites, We'll be dining with Bob on September 9 at a potential dinner spot for the GTG.
Tanuka-I'll give OM a try. Looks interesting. One never needs to leave Cambridge. |
Andy, where are you thinking of doing dinner? Your choice may affect our hotel decision for Saturday night.
|
Craig-We've become enamored of a Thai restaurant in East Cambridge called Similan. It's across from the Cambridgeside Galleria. We had dinner there with Bob and Karen last month and they liked it as well (at least they claimed to like it). We're having dinner with them 9/9/06 to finalize our plans. If wew don't choose that, we will probably return to Dok Bua, which is on Harvard St. in Brookline.
Regarding hotel choice, both are towards the middle of the city. Dinner is likely to conclude around 10:00 P.M.. |
tanuki---just for my records, do i have you on my listing as an attendee at the GTG under another name??
the rest. andy has suggested is quite nice and the food is delicious and it is all thai unlike the rest. OM which crosses cultures and is far more expensive.....and the parking situation in harvard square is very difficult....om is a place we might like to try another time however... |
There is a Hampton Inn about 1/2 mile from the restaurant Similan - looks very easy to get to from there. The reviews on Tripadvisor.com are pretty good. The AARP rate is $184.50 ($208 with tax). Breakfast is included and parking is free. Would it be worthwhile to make a tentative reservation?

Hi Rmkhmk--No, I won't be able to attend. I used to live in the Boston area but have lived in Nashville for the past two years and can't get back there in October. Btw, I wasn't suggesting that you have the "official" dinner at Om, but just pointing it out as a new place that is getting lots of "buzz" and that might be of interest to fans of Asian cuisine who are visiting Boston. Enjoy the GTG---maybe one of these years I can join you!
p.s. Have you ever been to the wonderful Cambodian restaurant "Elephant Walk" on Beacon Street right at the Boston/Brookline border? |
always on my list but never get there for some reason...
i misread your posting and thought you said you were coming...sorry you can not |
