cmt, you definitely don't want to stay in Burlington if you take the train and want to do some sightseeing in Boston/Cambridge -- Burlington is not convenient to the interesting spots, and you need a car.

For good access to the Fri & Sat dinners, a hotel near Kendall Square (Cambridge) would be ideal. You could take the Red Line & bus to Arlington Center for Friday, and you'd be in walking distance of Saturday's dinner. Second-best is any hotel near the Red line (Harvard Sq or Boston Common, for example).

cmt Aug 2nd, 2009 04:43 PM

Thanks for the advice. If anyone has hotel suggestions fitting the above guidelines, I'd welcome them. I'd better buy a map of Boston/Cambridge (or a guide book with maps).

easytraveler Aug 2nd, 2009 05:00 PM

cmt: My plans are looking more and more favorably on landing in Boston at least by the 10th of October.

Main reason is that the NY Met live HD simulcast will begin on the 10th and I can't see myself caught out in the New England toolies somewhere and missing the first live simulcast!

I'll definitely have a car, as have to drive in from Vermont. Be happy to pick you up from anywhere and give you a ride - at least to the Saturday night shindig.

Not certain yet where I'll be Friday night, but if close, I could also give you a ride on Friday night.

Otherwise, rizzuto's advice is good to get a hotel near the sights of Boston and Cambridge, where presumably you'd want to do some exploring.

rhkkmk Aug 2nd, 2009 06:58 PM

ok....as stated the indigo hotel is directly next door to the MBTA (public trolley system) at a station called riverside....this is the same name of the trolley line it is on and is also called the green line for cambridgeites that only know colors (note that is not cantabridgians)...

this is by far the easiest place of the weekend to get to...
friday nite is the most difficult although the MBTA has bus service to the area along Mass Avenue from Harvard square cambridge... saturday nite is just down the road from lechmere station on the MBTA also...

getting away after the GTG's is easy as many of us have cars and will drive you...

hotels: you will be shocked with the prices around boston....priceline is a good bet...
i will look for your mail on my alternative e site...

cmt Aug 3rd, 2009 05:55 AM

I was not planning to go to he Indigo Hotel, so my concerns were about getting to the other two GTGs.

I've never used Priceline. I had the impression that it's not possible to specify locations (sections of town, e.g.).

I should probably reconsider attending....

cmt Aug 3rd, 2009 05:57 AM

Easytraveler: Thank you very much for the offer. IF I do go, I would welcome rides in the evening. But so far, it's still a big "if" and I'm reconsidering.

rhkkmk Aug 3rd, 2009 06:58 AM

i notice that hotwire.com is advertising affordable hotel prices for boston

Gpanda Aug 3rd, 2009 07:37 AM

Before using Priceline, check out biddingfortravel, com. Anyway, when bidding on priceline, you pick a location and a star level and submit a bid for a certain dollar amount. Your bid will either be accepted or rejected. If accepted, they will tell you which hotel. I've used it lots with good savings.

absolutkz Aug 3rd, 2009 05:23 PM

I used Hotwire for Theater District and got the Radisson ( thought I can't recall how many stars). As with everywhere, hotels are down and I've seen some good deals - I think most recently on Travelzoo.

easytraveler Aug 3rd, 2009 07:51 PM

cmt: you've got to come! Boston is a great city and has so much to offer.

Right now, as the crazy quilt fragments of my trip come together, it looks like I'll be in Boston Friday and possibly even before that.

Being from California, we're used to driving long distances, so I can come and pick you up from whichever hotel you choose. Now you have no excuse not to come! :)

Give us an idea of what you want to do in Boston and I'm sure the guys can work out a good hotel for you.

rhkkmk Aug 3rd, 2009 07:54 PM

btw, for any of you who plan to come we need a count for each meal....please let me know of your intentions: [email protected]

rhkkmk Aug 4th, 2009 07:09 AM

i have written the final notice and will be sending it out about september 8 upon my return from europe... remember europe, that's the place we all used to go to before discovering the wonders of asia...

bookchick Aug 4th, 2009 05:06 PM

Ha, ha, Bob, yes, I know that comment was directed at me. Pfffft!

BC

indianapearl Aug 4th, 2009 05:13 PM

I still want to go to Italy one more time . . .

rhkkmk Aug 4th, 2009 05:53 PM

me too and england, france and all the other places...

bookchick Aug 5th, 2009 03:30 AM

I dunno, Bob, somehow I don't picture you back in Romania, nor do I see you in Luxor again for some reason....Indianapearl, there's nothing wrong with you, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise!!

BC

indianapearl Aug 5th, 2009 06:00 AM

Thanks, bookchick! I feel better now.

Gpanda Aug 5th, 2009 07:14 AM

The POB is soon off to Russia, then South Africa, then Bangkok with the pandas and then in May, Bali, again with the pandas. His dance card is pretty full. It was just our bad luck that he's actually going to be home for the GTG.

rhkkmk Aug 5th, 2009 07:28 AM

easy---can you send me a contact address for you so that i can add you to the e mail list for sept 8 about the final GTG info?

indianapearl Aug 6th, 2009 04:19 PM

simpsonc510: do you have a direct flight from The City with Big Shoulders?

simpsonc510 Aug 6th, 2009 11:02 PM

indiana
I start off in a local commuter airport, but yes, I have a non stop from ORD to Manchester NH.

Nywoman Aug 7th, 2009 09:05 AM

Y'all have a good to time you hear!!!

Gpanda Aug 7th, 2009 01:22 PM

Carol-you'll need a visa to go from New hampshire to Cambridge.

bookchick Aug 7th, 2009 05:08 PM

And Panda, you should have vaccinations before leaving Cambridge for anywhere!

BC

Gpanda Aug 8th, 2009 02:13 AM

Why would I leave Cambridge? Aside from the random trip to Asia, I remain in Cambridge as much as possible. Allowing Bob to lure us out to the GFS suburbs for the lunch on Sat. was a big concession.

bookchick Aug 8th, 2009 06:06 AM

Gpanda, it's a conspiracy! Be careful!

BC

Gpanda Aug 8th, 2009 06:07 AM

In the immortal words of Elmer Fudd, I'll be veddy, veddy cawful.

simpsonc510 Aug 8th, 2009 04:24 PM

Wow, BC... I didn't have any idea that you could keep up with the bad boys here on the forum! Good on you! See you in October in BOS.
Carol

bookchick Aug 8th, 2009 04:46 PM

Carol, I am so looking forward to seeing you again, and I'm enjoying reading about your adventures in BKK.

BC

simpsonc510 Aug 9th, 2009 04:36 PM

Bob, I'm picking up my little gift items from BKK. Any hint as to how many will be attending? Male/female? (I might do two different gift bags... one for guys, one for gals)... or another thought is to do a "couple" bag and a "single" bag.

Carol

rhkkmk Aug 9th, 2009 06:11 PM

people are very slow to indicate their attendence this year....it must be because the GTG in not in the city....haha... and that they object to the free parking.... i always plan on 30 and there are more women usually than men...

indianapearl Aug 11th, 2009 11:54 AM

I'm still thinking about this, but there's only about a 10% chance I'll join you.

rhkkmk Aug 16th, 2009 08:07 AM

leaving next week for two weeks but a reminder notice will be sent out about sept 7-8

rhkkmk Sep 8th, 2009 02:47 PM

I e mailed those whom i thought had interest today.....so if there are others, please let me know at [email protected]

responses are coming in quickly now....

simpsonc510 Sep 8th, 2009 03:02 PM

Bob
I see that in the first entry (waaaaaay back when you started this thread) you indicated that the Waltham hotel would be the hdqtrs. Without reading all the way through, did we manage to change that to Burlington Summerfield Suites? Just checking.
Carol

rhkkmk Sep 8th, 2009 03:57 PM

yes maybe about 1/2 way...

puttakka Sep 9th, 2009 04:47 AM

Thank you so much for the invite!!! I will try to stop by for one of the events.

puttakka Sep 9th, 2009 04:54 AM

BTW, since I am a waitress, I appreciate your "cash-only" planning!!!!

Also, I live in Boston, so if anyone has any questions about how to spend your time in this lovely city, LMK! I must say, though, I rarely venture over to Cambridge. I hear it is lovely.

simpsonc510 Sep 9th, 2009 05:01 AM

Hey, hope you'll join us, puttakka. I was a waitress a couple of times, before finishing my degree and then teaching 1st grade for 33 years... I was a carhop too! Back in the 60s at an A & W Rootbeer stand... no, we didn't wear skates!

Don't forget to let Bob know that you plan to pop in. Hope to see you!

Carol
