Err.. I was not just referring to my own trip reports but to others that I've read. "creepy" posters as in people commenting on someone's trip reports about their personal style of travels (expensive hotels and first class etc.), detractors as in people commenting on a trip report which involved the use of travel agents in China etc. Kathie is right as well with regard to racist remarks which have beed deleted but knowing that there are these people out there is rather off putting.

Another reason also is the censorship by the moderators. Sometime I cannot justify the reason for their censorship and at time I even consider them to be prejudicial.

All in all, no more TR for me and I will only contribute by help answering questions which sometime might involve politics in order to get my answers out there. I don't think I have started a topic on politic at Fodors.com but if I did then sorry!

Just my opinion!

First trip to South Africa, first trip to Kenya & Tanzania, first trip to Namibia, first trip to Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos), and third trip to Italy (to explore the whole country), would not have been nearly as enjoyable, educational and inspiring had it not been for trip reports. Before I can even post my first questions I use trip reports to get me to the point of even knowing what I want to ask. From there, forum members have helped shape my trips immensely. I could not imagine planning a trip without reading reports and asking questions. Oh, the countries and hotels I would have missed. And let's not talk about the mixed up itineraries covering unnessesary terrain! And the places I'm going now because of reading reports! Now I must see Burma and Java -- who knew? From here on out, I promise to do better to comment positively on each report I read. Anything for people to continue writing!

mrwunrfl got it right... pretty rough crowd here. Remember, my first BOS GTG my son would not let me fly off to Boston alone to get together with strangers from the internet. Who knows what sort of folks lurk around here.....

That was how many years ago? Maybe 2005/2006? I'm still alive, and my Asia fodors friends are now REAL friends in real life. Yeah, there may be a few oddballs, but for the most part, this is a very special group of friends. Such nice people in real life!

Bob, thanks for the TR, but if it was perfect then you didn't do it right.

I take it back, there ARE creepy posters here. Someone annoyed by a post of mine from last October (!) has tried to post seriously obscene comments on my blog, along with an actual death threat!!! (But that was from the Europe board.)

crellston Jan 16th, 2014 11:12 PM

"But that was from the Europe board" you sort of expect nasty comments on that board but death threats!!!

thursdaysd - one day people won't be able to hide behind screen names, and that might alter their behaviour. THere have in fact been some prosecutions in the UK for similar offences.

thursdaysd Jan 17th, 2014 06:02 AM

I think this is a follow on from an attack in the fall. Since this one included physical threats I filed a police report. A friend of mine wants me to involve the FBI....

I'm not opposed to anonymity, unfortunately some people take advantage of it.

annhig Jan 17th, 2014 10:27 AM

thursdaysd - i'm glad you went to the police. Doubtless the cowards who got prosecuted here in the UK thought that they weren't going to be caught but they proved to be wrong.

Kathie Jan 17th, 2014 10:43 AM

People do take exception to my comments form time to time, but I've not had a death threat. I wonder what you wrote that someone responded in that way. I've heard the Europe group are a tough crew, but death threats???

thursdaysd Jan 17th, 2014 11:01 AM

Kathie - appears to be this one: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...omment-8420714

Aside from a specific death threat and some other physical threats, there were plenty of obscenities - the police officer thought the writer must be male on the basis of the language, but I don't think so.

I'm addicted to the forum and especially love reading the trip reports. I get so much good info and ideas for future trips. Like many of you, I know the discouraging feeling when no one comments on my report, but I do believe there are lurkers out there. At times I don't read the report when it is written (like kathie's), but believe me, they are appreciated and if not read immediately, then at some future date (as I have recently been poring thru kathie's Indonesia adventures). Bob - please don't give up and continue to post your reports.

Kathie Jan 18th, 2014 07:32 AM

Yes, I think you are right, thursdays. I expect we know who made the threats.
