quirkles, sorry you'll miss this one. Are you from the Boston area? If so, plan to attend the big GTG in October! It's always a lot of fun and great travel conversation.

sue, I assume you are now at the Marriott. Welcome to BKK! I hope your trip here was uneventful. Looking forward to meeting at Maeng's tomorrow at 4.

MichaelBKK, Sue just called me here at Adelphi to say that she and her DH will probably not be able to make the GTG this afternoon. Their flight over from Chicago took its toll... She got sick first day, and now her DH is sick. He may need to be tended to. She says if she feels like traveling on the BTS by herself, she may still try to come, but she sounded a bit hesitant.

Anyway, Sue asked if I could get in touch with you. I don't have a phone number so the only way to get in touch is by way of the internet. I have no idea if you will read this before heading out to Maeng's.

Brad and I will be there, as will Maeng, in any case. You are most welcome to join us, and meet Maeng. Sue may show up. That is still up in the air as of right now. She is anxious to meet up, as she is curious about the markets I like to shop.

If you do not come to Maeng's at 4, then we are to assume that you have read this message and have opted to "opt out" of the GTG. That's fine... I have no problem with that. If, on the other hand, you are at Maeng's at 4, I look forward to yet another mini-GTG here in BKK!

After all this talk, I've just got to go to the Pickled Liver and have a beer on my next trip to BKK. How far down Soi 11 is it?

simpsonc510 Jan 3rd, 2009 11:18 PM

Degas, absolutely you should go there on your next trip. Maeng loves meeting my friends from the internet.

The entrance to the PL is really just beyond Zanzibar. Just past their parking lot, there is an alley off to the left. Cheap Charley's is the first place in the alley. This alley is shaped like an upside down U with both "ends" of the U touching soi 11. Maeng's place is on the back side of the U. It's almost the last place you would see, before heading back out to soi 11 on the other "leg" of the U. It can't be more than about 5 minutes (maybe less) from Sukhumvit! You say you have been to Zanzibar, so just one more minutes walk, and you're at PL.

Sue, sorry you and DH didn't make it to the mini-GTG at Maeng's. MichaelBKK and DS and I visited like old friends. We've met up before and enjoy talking about our travels in and around BKK and Asia.

Hope to hear from you before I go home. You have my cell #... don't hesitate to call! DH is on his way back to Zurich tonight so I'm somewhat footloose! I can come to the Marriott... what do you think? But it would be great if you could meet Maeng. She LOVES to take people to the markets!!

Got it. I looked for it last time, but didn't go down that U :).

Great, Degas! When you go, be sure to introduce yourself to Maeng. She loves meeting my friends from the internet. Tell her you know Carol and Brad from Illinois. She'll know exactly who you mean. And if you return in the future, she will remember you! Also, if your wife would like information (or a guide) through the markets, Maeng is more than happy to help!

Hi from Thailand
So very sorry to have missed the GTG last week. I became horribly ill on the JAL Flight over and just as I was feeling better, in BKK dh got the bug too. Being confined in an airplane while undergoing a complete system "cleansing" is not my idea of a way to begin a holiday!!! As dh was quite ill on the day of our GTG I didn't feel I should go off galivanting around BKK so I really missed out.
Also, we finally have free internet in our room now that we are on Phuket at the beautiful Marriott Resort Beach Club and Spa Villas.
Both of us are now well and will be back in BKK on he 25th Jan.
Kathy will be glad to know I'm having some great pieces made for me at SJ Jewelry am so looking forward to picking those up.
Anyway, so sorry to not have met up with you Carol and Michael.

Sue
It's good to see your post here. I've been very concerned about both you and your DH. After our phone conversation, I thought I might hear from you before I had to be on the plane back to OHare. Anyway, we'll try for another time. Good to read that you are both feeling well once again.

You should count your lucky stars that you are away from Chicago right now. We just left there yesterday (in pretty much blizzard conditions) for a week in sunny and warm Las Vegas!! The temps back home will dip below 0 with wind chills WAAAAAYYYY below 0.

Enjoy the rest of your time in Thailand (and Hawaii...).

Carol
