Geographically, it makes most sense to do a loop. HK - Guilin - Xian - Shanghai - HK; or vice versa. That means the shortest total flight time.
However, that doesn't necessarily means the cheapest. For example, Guilin - Xian has one or two flights a day, and little discount. So, if you want the cheapest total cost, you have to try different combinations to check.
Also, there aren't that many non-stop HKG (Hong Kong)- XIY (Xian) or HKG - KWL (Guilin) flights a day. To save a little bit of money and to get better flight times, you may want to fly into and out of Shenzhen (SZX) instead of HKG.
