this should get you started...ask any questions you wish about specifics...

wine is so so in bkk and very expensive...suggest you take a pass..

Kathie Sep 11th, 2005 10:58 AM

Do a search on this board for Bangkok restaurants, as there have been many dozens of posts on this topic.

Someone who is a real foodie did a post within the last year that had links to his photos of exquisite food at a couple of Bangkok restaurants.

The Bed Supper Club is getting rave reviews on this board for both the food and the unusual atmosphere.

glorialf Sep 11th, 2005 07:06 PM

1. China House at Oriental for dim sum and the best peking duck I've ever had.
2. Lord Jim at oriental
3. Bed Supper Club
4.La Normandie
5. Biscotti at 4 Seasons for Italian

simpsonc510 Sep 11th, 2005 07:46 PM

I would also list Bed Supper Club as a number one in BKK. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is sooo unique! I also like the Italian restaurant at Bamrungrad Hospital (yes, it's WONDERFUL).

(Bob, I didn't realize you've been to Senor Picos. Lots of fun!!!)

Eat Me.

It's a very good spot, creative cuisine.

off Convent road

simpsonc510 Sep 12th, 2005 05:51 AM

Matteo at the Intercontinental for good Italian food.

Guisco on soi 23 for good Italian too.

Lunch at Jim Thompson house.

Unusual?... Try Karnmanee Palace hotel rooftop dining for Thai... you should probably be with someone who speaks the language although the menu is in English and Thai. Be prepared for some unusual things on the menu! Seven of us dined for about $30.

Greyhound Cafe at Central Chitlom dept store, or the 7th floor Food Loft for lunch. Both are very good.

orgy7 Sep 12th, 2005 05:56 AM

I havnt' had beans and rice for months now. my mom up in heaven is getting worried now. I heard about senior piccos. I'm not a huge fan of mexican food it's all guacamole too me. But it is as hispanic as it gets around here. anyways. I've read senior picos has a live band I'm wondering if anyone knows what kind of music they play. ODALE ODALE

oh ya. is the food decent.?

johnbey Sep 12th, 2005 07:18 AM

In addition to seconding Bob's recommendation of Rang Mahal, the Indian restaurant in the Rembrandt Hotel and undoubtedly my favourite Indian food in the city, I offer Red Pepper in the same hotel http://hotel.rembrandtbkk.com/dining/red_pepper.html

The softshell crab is to die for and the raspberry chillie sorbet the ultimate palate cleansing dessert.

We're duck and crispy pork guys and I haven't found better than the on-view before you order deal at Silom Village. It might be a bit touristy, with its dancing girls and Thai combo, but the food is excellent and very well priced. It was first introduced to us by Thai friends and there's usually as many Thais dining as farangs.

kuranosuke Sep 13th, 2005 04:28 PM

where is this silom village? close to what bts and/or other familiar spots?

Kenstee Sep 13th, 2005 04:49 PM

For me I found Thara Thong, the Thai restaurant at the Royal Orchard Sheraton, to have the best and most authenic Thai restaurant food I've had in Bangkok and I've tried a LOT of places. And I'm real picky about my Thai food!!! It's the real thing. Beautiful location right on the river.

laurieco Sep 13th, 2005 05:19 PM

I'm a little curious about what you mean about the Thara Thong having the most authentic Thai food in Bangkok. Gee, and I thought most of the restaurants in Bangkok served authentic Thai food. Bangkok IS in Thailand after all.

simpsonc510 Sep 13th, 2005 05:47 PM

orgy
The time we were at Senor Picos the band was from Cuba. They played some pop music. The sound was good!

Kathie Sep 13th, 2005 06:02 PM

I love the food and the setting at Thara Thong. I don't know about it being any more or less authentic than other places, though they do pride themselves on having some unusual regional dishes.

All the food I eat in Bangkok appears to be authentic - not a chunk of plastic or wax in it - lol.

rhkkmk Sep 13th, 2005 06:09 PM

ken---its way away from nana....haha

its a small shopping center, restaurant area on silom not far from the holiday inn on the other side of the street....it is a good area, i'm surprised you do not know it....you may know it by another name...

BillT Sep 14th, 2005 08:11 AM

For great Dim Sum that won't break the bank- try the Penn. Its very good and very reasonable for a 5 star hotel. When we were in BKK we were going to try China House but after looking at the menun outside it seemed way over priced. It may be good as others have said- but you pay dearly IMHO!

kuranosuke Sep 14th, 2005 08:22 AM

bob, away from nana? hmmmm, i may have to rethink my priorities. i will be staying at the hi silom, so i will check this village place out. i like the suk area, so not too familiar with silom. thanks for the info.

i say if you want real thai food, hang with orgy..........well... maybe not.

glorialf Sep 14th, 2005 08:24 AM

Funny -- I think the Peking Duck at China House is the best value I have ever found in Bangkok and about 25% of what I would pay in the states. Face it, Bill -- there is nothing about the Oriental you will ever admit to liking. :-) And there is nothing about the Penn you won't like. At least I admit the pool at the Oriental is not great and the rooms are smaller than at the Penn. And I admit that the bathrooms at the Penn is great and the rooms large and lovely with wonderful views. :-)

rhkkmk Sep 14th, 2005 09:57 AM

dim sum at the liu rest. in the conrad hotel is hard to beat anyplace in the world....lunch daily fixed price, all you can eat...

ken---decent places at silom village....
also himali cha cha is nearby off of new road
also harmonique on soi 34, new road
you must try tongue thai, in back of OP place which is in back of the oriental....
gallery cafe on capt bush rd in back of the sheraton is another good food place---thai....

you will like the silom rd area....have a drink one clear nite atop the state office building at corner of silom and new rds....very expensive drinks but worth it for the view....1.5 blocks towards the river from HI..

hope you are upgrading to exec floor as it is worth the extra....evening hors are well worth the price and very nice breakfast....free drinks as well...

laurieco Sep 14th, 2005 01:04 PM

As much as I love the Pen, I agree with Gloria 100% that the Oriental's China House has the best Peking Duck, much cheaper and better than here in NY. I haven't had the dim sum there yet but I have had it at the Pen and it is very good and reasonable. Also, the Shang has a great dim sum lunch as well for a very reasonable price. The China House however still rates as my favorite restaurant in the world. Not just because of the duck but also the ambience, it is soooo elegant. Everytime we eat there (we always have the duck) my husband and I agree that it is still the best meal(s) we've ever had, anywhere.

Craig Sep 14th, 2005 01:18 PM

I think the Peking Duck at the China House will be a great birthday dinner for my wife Jeane and I next February - do you agree? P.S. We are staying at the Penn (1st time - we stayed at the Oriental in 2000.)

glorialf Sep 14th, 2005 01:37 PM

I know I'd like to have a birthday dinner there!

So were you at the Oriental BEFORE they redid all the rooms. They did that in 2001 I think.

Craig Sep 14th, 2005 02:27 PM

Gloria, They were in the process of redoing all the rooms when we were there. We stayed in the garden wing which had already been refurbished. It was one of those great split level rooms with an amazing view of the river. We have absolutely nothing against the Oriental - it was a wonderful hotel. Thanks for your input on the b-day dinner.

laurieco Sep 14th, 2005 02:37 PM

I second the birthday dinner there. It's perfect! I can't think of a better place to celebrate.

KMLoke Sep 14th, 2005 04:36 PM

check this out! The food looks yummy...

Guenmai Sep 14th, 2005 06:59 PM

I second the food at the Italian restuarant in Bumrungrad Hospital next door to the Au Bon Pain Bakery. The food was THE best! I just ate there a few weeks ago. Can't wait to eat there again. Go on chicasia.com for restaurant suggestions. Happy Travels!

ralex Sep 14th, 2005 07:51 PM

Baan Khanitha (sp?) is truly great and not to be missed!

orgy7 Sep 14th, 2005 08:31 PM

Guenmai that was a good link. but I just found out how un-chic I am. I have only been to 3 places on that site

KURAN. how on earth can it be that your more chic then I am. heck you invited me to le delat indochine.

patsey73 Sep 14th, 2005 09:57 PM

Guenmai thanks for the link, enjoyed looking at it and it is helping me pick places to eat at while in BKK, at this rate I'll be having 5 meals a day - 3 weeks today - am I counting - YES!!

cruisinred Sep 15th, 2005 04:42 AM

Just curious, what are the prices like for the peking duck at the Oriental House?

Sounds like a great bkk evening might be cocktails at one of the hotel lounges, followed by dinner at the Oriental House. I have read in a few places that bars/lounges at the Oriental are better than those at the Peninsula; true?

PS I love peking duck and even tried making it at home recently. (very messy experience, btw)

glorialf Sep 15th, 2005 05:53 AM

Seems to me the Peking Duck at China Hosue in the Oriental Hotel was somewhere in the $20-25 range for two people -- so $10-$12 per person. It's priced per duck.

kuranosuke Sep 15th, 2005 09:49 AM

orgy; i didn't know i was chic. not bad for a guy who stays at the baiyoke suites and the ambassador hotel. btw, sorry about you having to work in the kitchen after our meal at le dalat indochine.

cruisinred, the bamboo bar in the oriental is the best place for a cocktail before dinner. happy hour will get you a 007 martini for $3.50, snacks, and great live piano music. one of my favorite places. great after dinner too, usually with live jazz music.

pamdamage Sep 19th, 2005 04:27 PM

Hi all - just went on the Jim Thompson website and they listed three restaurants. Which one do people generally refer to when the recommend lunch?

Thanks - Pam

bkkmei Sep 19th, 2005 06:16 PM

hi

I bet, kbvolkmann, you don't know where to start now!

I have to second/third/fourth any suggestion for the China House. I only had dim sum but it was divine. Now I want to try that Peking Duck!

I'd also like to suggest Somboon seafood which has the best crab curry in town - all v. reasonably priced. It's on the corner of Chong Nonsi and Surawong.

I have other suggestions in my blog - though am eager to try the other recommendations above too!

http://scoffbkk.blogspot.com/

rhkkmk Sep 19th, 2005 06:17 PM

pam...they all have very similar menus...i like them all...depends where you are...i actually try to hit them all each trip...the farmer's merket one off of silom is my least favorite...

we love the one at the JT house...good to eat in combination with a visit to the museum....

while shopping at the main store on suriwong, we alsways eat lunch in the 2nd floor cafe....it is perhaps the best of the bunch...no that's not fair --they all are good...

kuranosuke Sep 19th, 2005 06:44 PM

the crab curry at somboon is excellent, just like the one in chinatown.
