Bangkok: Still To Do List

Anybody got a list going and an intent to tick a few off on the next trip?

I'll give a few to start things off:

Evening river cruise
Queen Saowapha Snake Farm
Kamthieng House
Wat Ra Kang
Ladyboy show
Bamboo Pub
Massage at Face
Attend a Thai boxing event

Feedback on these and insight into your places are welcome.

Is that the Bamboo Bar at the Oriental or "THE" Bamboo Bar on soi 3?? Just curious. The Bamboo at the Oriental is much more reserved than the other........

I've done at least 4 river dinner cruises that I can recall, and enjoyed each one of them. I've done the Oriental boat a couple of times; I've done the Shangri-La boat; and I've done a boat that docks at River City. I prefer having a buffet style meal rather than sit-down/served fixed menu. I like a boat that has tables with a view of the river and city lights. That's the best part of an evening cruise!

BTW, we are back off the road, so Brad should be answering your thread about playing pool in BKK sometime in the near future.

Hi Carol

Buddy wants to go to the Bambo Pub on soi 3 to play pool and check out the girls. Guess i'll have to go to protect his virtue and wallet!

I may just ride a boat on the river and skip the dinner, really after seeing the skyline lit up at night.

Bob, the Erawan Shrine is a worthwhile destination, but it's not a wat and it's not Buddhist - it's a shrine to a Hindu god. I do try to visit each trip.

I always have more wats to visit.

We haven't been to Calypso Cabaret yet - it's been on the list for years.

It's been ages since I've done a klong tour - that's on the list as well.

There is a long list of restaurants I'd like to try - the Pen, a seafood place that is the favorite of a German friend of ours, and many others that don't immediately come to mind.

If I find my list from last year, I'll be able to give more suggestions.

Wat Rakaeng is not my favorite, although the walk there from Wang Lung pier is interesting enough. On that side, Wat Kalayanamit is more interesting, as is Wat Prayoon and Wat Pichai Yathikaram (Kathie might like the last, very Khmer).

The Princess Mother memorial is a small but interesting place. Another sight where the walk there from the memorial bridge pier can be more interesting than the destination. It's very close to the above temples I've just mentioned.

Speaking of the late Princess Mother, I read that Sra Pathum palace was going to be opened to the public, but no sign of that last time I was in the area (it's right behind Siam Discovery).

Another fun place for a game of pool and a beer would be the Hilary Bar on soi 4. I think I would prefer it over the Bamboo... but the Bamboo does have its history with the Vietnam guys on R & R. Soi 4 has much more activity than soi 3.

Hey. Michael, thanks for the tip! It's been ages since I've visited wats in that area. I'll put Wat Pichai Yathikaram on my list!

I can't believe I've visited Bangkok five times and I still haven't been to a lady boy show
I missed the snake hospital too
Bed Supper Club still needs to be visited.

rhkkmk Mar 10th, 2009 06:06 AM

i can't believe how slow this thread is moving...usually this type of thing would take off....is this a response to the new format??

Craig Mar 10th, 2009 07:19 AM

Okay Bob, I'll stop lurking and post. The only thing about the new format that I'm finding hard to get used to is that once you get to the end of a thread, it is difficult to get back to where you were in the left column listing of recent activity. In the old format, the two columns moved independently of each other.

Here are my picks, none of which will necessarily be accomplished during our two-day Bangkok stay in April:

dinner at Kinnaree and The Long Table
the Penn's "Sundown Cocktail Cruise" (Fri, Sat & Sun only)
tour with Tong (making merit, orphanage, "secret place" etc.)

all are perfect craig and full of photo-ops

use the back arrow and it will take you right back to where you left off....i agree its a pain and i told katie....also i wish that we could jump to the top of a thread from the bottom instantly

LeighTravelClub Mar 10th, 2009 01:51 PM

Yes, I've been lurking too. The new format is a real 'put off' for me. Don't like it at all....for many reasons !!
Now looking elsewhere for my travel chatter. Three cheers say many of you !
A comprehensive cycle trip around Bangkok is high on my list of things 'yet to do'

Kathie:
You must go to the Calypso Cabaret- its a blast. We have done it twice and will do it again when we are in BKK next June. If Bob is there at that time I'll drag him there as well. I'll have him sit in the front row and he will become part of the show!

rhkkmk Mar 10th, 2009 03:26 PM

bill i was thinking that you and i could do our east coast/west coast act.... i'm the 'straight' man....

i'm not sure i can endure that duck tape again however

Craig Mar 10th, 2009 04:37 PM

Right you are Bob about the back button if only I can remember to do it (old dog, new trick) - what also works is opening the poster's thread in a new window (or tab, if your browser has that capability) - still an extra step from the "old way".

rhkkmk Mar 10th, 2009 05:19 PM

i am concerned at the lack of participation on this board....usually at this time of year there is tons of activity

simpsonc510 Mar 10th, 2009 05:46 PM

Bob... It's just not as user friendly as it used to be! Period!! I'm gradually getting used to it and posting a bit more, but it took me a while to get into this new format.

Craig, glad to see you have Kinnaree and Long Table on your list of things to do! Both are excellent.

On my to-do list I guess would be taking the bus/boat trip to Ayutayah. I think I'd like the boat trip in particular, since I've already been to see Ayutayah ruins, by car, with a Thai friend.

I'm also gradually getting used to the new site. I expect it will take time for all of us to feel as comfortable here as we did with the old interface.

Now, here's a massage experience I bet none of you have had yet (well, except maybe for Dogster):
