Haven't been to Bangkok, but have reservations at the Hilton on May 15th for 3 nights, after researching several places I decidedon HIlton because of several factors. First of all price was cheaper than most other on the river. It is located in Nai Lert Park and I am a nature lover so I am sure this will be nice. Nice landscaping and interior seems nice. If you do a search under Hilton Bangkok you can view some nice photos.I've looked up reviews and nothing negative at all. It also has a spa and a nice gym, and all the quirks. Still close to the ferry and other transport. Right up the street from Thai fighting arena. Great selection of restuarants, and is a 5* hotel. So it's not on the river, big deal. Rather save some money and still get a great hotel.

The main reason to stay on the river is transportation. Bangkok traffic is terrible. The best way to get around to the major tourist sights (the palace, etc., River City shopping) is by river bus/taxi. It's nice to have a river view, eat on a terrace by the river, feed the fish, but the most important benefit is the ease of movement thru the city plus the Skytrain right there. That's why tourists pay extra to stay there.
