Atmospheric/beautiful settings Thai restaurant in Bangkok
Muffin and I will be in BKK beginning of Dec (we have been several times before) we have a couple of nights. I wanted to go to some nice thai restaurants. (i am not looking to open up the authentic/non authentic debate here)
We have been to La na Thai before @ Face and we really liked that setting, so am looking for beautiful restaurants (with good food of course) I had pencilled in Kinnaree and have now decided NOT to go to Bo-lan (i may go for lunch) Can anyone recommend a place (or places) with a nice setting. |
Mahanaga? Haven't seem them mentioned lately. That's the only one that comes to mind. I gotta get out more.
Kinnaree is a great choice, IMO. Glad to see it made your list.
Nicky...Both Kathie and Bob and I had a bad expierence there last year. Lovely atmosphere, but way over priced, pretenscious service and only so so food. Sorry Michael...k

I have been to Mahanaga- probably the worst restaurant we have been to in BKK!! but thanks anyway.
Any more? when i get home i will post the name of a couple that i thought sounded great in my Luxe guide and see if anyone has been. |
I have eaten at Mahanaga twice. Fabulous atmosphere! The first time was great - great food (more Thai than fusion) great service. The second time was... not great. Mediocre food, spotty service.

Does muffin eat what you eat or do you bring a can of cat for for her?
Muffin is a he!
What about Baan Khanitha? I haven't eaten there, but it's been on my list for a while. Hanuman says the South Sathorn location is nicest.
I'm putting together my list of restaurants to try when we are in Bkk (Jan16 thru29). Baan Khanitha is at the top of our list.
I've eaten at both BK's. Enjoyed both. Since I usually stay at the SGS, I usually go to the Soi 23 location. I wouldn't go out of the way to visit the Sathorn location.
We will be doing the Sathorn location when we are there.
The top of the banyan tree is about as atmospheric as you're going to get.
Is the food Thai and is it good?
We liked the atmosphere at Salathip in the Shangri La right along the river. They have entertainment there that changes with the seasons. Good food too!
Aloha! |
i like the setting at zanzibar, good food too, on suk soi 11. also le dalat indochine.
Vertigo is the bar/restaurant atop the Banyan Tree. Most people recommend it for an evening drink, as the food is very expensive and by most reviews, not very good. Oh, and the food is not Thai. There is a dress code.

Smeagol,
Since you'll be here at the beginning of December the weather COULD be cooler and nice enough to eat al fresco as well. I'm trying to think of restaurants that have both nice indoor as well as outdoor settings but for now here are some more suggestions. For Thai food in a atmospheric setting the Blue Elephant in Bangkok is quite nice. I have not eaten there, don't like fusion food too much, but I know the location and have eaten at the restaurant that used to be there before the B.E. took over it. http://www.blueelephant.com/bangkok/index.html The Terrace Rim Naam at the Oriental does offer very nice atmosphere and if it's cool enough it will be perfect IMO. Baan Khanita, as Kathie have said above, does offer nice food and the Sathorn location is newer but it depend on where you're staying closer too. I'll try and think of more. |
Thanks everyone.
I think i'll go to Vertigo for drinks but as Kathies says the reviews don't look good and anyway i want Thai. Hanuman - we are staying at the S-la although happy to go anywhere (within reason) We LOVED the setting of Supatra by the river and Face so thats the sort of thing i am looking for (i am a sucker for those "ancient" thai houses) anyhow i will check out ALL the above - thanks so much everyone as they ALL look great, i'm sure we will find something in there. The suggestion from HT ref the S-la res could be good for us too (see now i have too few days in Bangkok - as always) Oh- Luxe gude recommends Ruen Mallika- anyone been? |
