Gardy is correct about the short flight and not overdoing the food thing. However, my DH is a diabetic so had to purchase that airline food. I opted to wait. LOL It depends upon the time of day for their flights also. What we do now when we fly is buy a sandwich, etc. after we get thru security, and bring it on the plane to eat. Wait for the beverages to be served and we are good to go. Sometimes we don't eat but wait til we get to our destination. I usually do bring lots of snacks (granola bars, pb crackers, etc.) because my DH is a diabetic.

How about some lens cleaning wipes? They are small like a the alcoholic wipes used in Dr. offices for shots. I get mine at walmart. It's great for glasses, ipad and camera screens. I also would put in a travel pack of tissues and nail file. I always break a nail at the airport.

If you get these, point out that the water in the bathroom sinks on planes is not potable and can't be used for rinsing.

Two amenity kit items that I don't think have been mentioned: mouthwash and socks - stretchy little socks that I put overtop of my own socks - for the warmth and to keep the cooties off.

The ONE THING you have to include is a pen for filling out customs and immigration forms.

Personally, I love the Earplanes. I have had problems with my ears several times when landing and I now use them both for take-off and landing and haven't had a problem since.

mrwunrfl, thanks for noting the value of a pen. I always carry one on my trips, too. I look for a good click kind, ie, the kind with no cap to lose.

I really think all the teeny stuff would make the best gift. Packed in a cute travel case... tissues, earplugs, lotion, lifesavers or mints, 2-pack of Advil or other, pen, wet-wipe, all the little but handy stuff suggestions.

I wouldn't get into eye mask, blankets, etc. etc. for a short flight.

I just love amenities kits an think it's a great idea. I also didn't realize the Boston-Iceland flight was so short.

I was just rummaging through our leftover kits to pack some things for DH who's flying out of town tomorrow -- we like the pen, tissues, wipes, earplugs, tbrush, socks, and shoe bag/cover the best. You could possibly pack a separate small liquids bag if you want to include lotion, drops, or tpaste.

Lufthansa once had a combo fold-up brush/comb in the bag which I loved and still keep in my purse.

Xanax for someone who has never flown? Are you kidding? Please folks-try not to do drugs (read Ambien,Xanax,etc.) if you don't know how you react to them. I have had too many passengers need to be taken off of my flights by paramedics because they couldn't wake up. Vent over!
Personally, I would go to Walmart/TJ MAXX/Target and get her an adaptor kit ($9.99),blow up travel pillow,travel blanket/big scarf, Nalgene bottle (to reuse for water and liquids again and again),AYR brand saline nasal gel,earplugs with eyemask.
Most business class amenity kits carry a
travel size toothbrush/toothpaste,chapstick and hand cream,comb,kleenex,socks to wear onboard, eyeshade and ear plugs,pen (need one for doing some of the immigration cards coming into the UK).
TJ Maxx/Marshalls has a lot of this travel stuff cheap so take a look there to save some money.They carry everything from a passport case,luggage weight scale (very important for flying European carriers)to squeeze tubes in 3 ounce sizes.

Wow. I personally would not use any of those things (ok, the earplugs). I think it's a bad idea to "gift" a newbie traveler with all this stuff to lug around. And if I'm understanding correctly, this is a 5 hour flight, not a 24 hr one!
