Question for Hari

Hari--
I was reading a post the other night where the poster wanted to thank Hari for his help. Hari?! Are you a man? If so, I'll have to adjust my mental image of you. I have you pictured as a petite young woman. Can't tell you exactly why, but that's the way I see you. Will adjust, of course, if necessary. At any rate, male or female, young or not, petite or not, I do enjoy reading your posts.

BO2642,

You got that wrong.....i'm a 32 year old man......

Why the curiosity? Either way.....i'm glad my posts are entertaining.....

Hari

O.K. I've revised my mental image. Why the curiousity? I think that it's normal. Anyone who reads the boards over a period of time comes to appreciate the regular contributors as kindred souls, and there's a sense of sweet familiarity in reading the posts of those who, by the sheer amount of time and energy they put into sharing information, form the nucleus of the African message board community. It is impossible, at least for me, not to form a mental image of those who I feel I've come to know a bit through regularly reading their posts. Sometimes, as in your case, those images don't square with the reality. That's why I've so appreciated it when posters have included photos of themselves as they've shared their trip photos. In the scheme of things, a correct mental image is not important if one just drops into the boards to gather information, but for me, it's nice to be able to picture someone whose contributions I've been drawn to over a period of months and whom I have come to view as a message board friend.

I am surprised how close my mental images are to reality when I finally see a picture.

Hari a petite young woman? That image never crossed my mind. For some reason I picture him about 50ish, with a beard, reading Ernest Hemingway in a leather wing chair, possibly smoking a pipe and taking the odd break to answer my incessant Botswana questions. But 32? That's amazing that you've been able to go to Africa so many times. I'm 33 and this will be my second trip, with hopefully a few more to come.

We could turn this into a "Describing Hari" thread. A pipe never entered my mind.

As he's now a good friend, I can say this: I thought he might be short, portly and middle aged. Then he said he ran marathons, so I dropped the portly bit! :D

I didn't think portly and yoga went together so I figured not portly.

This makes one wonder what mental images others have about each of us.

Leely Dec 22nd, 2006 03:48 PM

I picture Hari as the human version of a cheetah.

Feel free to envision me as a giraffe.

Nyamera--well, we all know what she looks like. Watch the horns!

afrigalah Dec 22nd, 2006 04:39 PM

Me...my wife would probably call me a dagga boy (my grandkids call me 'grumps') but we all know dagga boys aren't married ;)

Leely, A giraffe? Not a female Asian actress? I'm referring to your Fodor Lounge comments.

By the way......it's also interesting to put a voice to the posts....

I'm visiting here in the US at the moment (was in NYC the last 3 days, and right now in Florida visiting a cousin)i did chat on the phone with atleast two fodorites. It was a very nice conversation and was nice to put a voice to the posts that i have been reading for a while....
