A Strange Kind of Love...
I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time (despite the dull light) to witness a pair of Egyptian Geese mating.
It might seem a bit rough, but it seems to work for them... http://filmingwild.wildlifedirect.or...d-goose-chase/ |
Great photos Tanya.

Cute title, Wild Goose Chase. Your photos were excellent. Never thought I'd be commenting on goose porn.

An amusing "I'm da man!" pose / display after the fact... Or am I *anthropomorph-ing*?

Cool pics! I didn't know birds actually "did it", thought they just laid eggs.
But coming from someone who asked the woman at the petting zoo if chickens nursed, it fits! |

Matnikstym,
In 5th grade I was under the same impression about birds. My friend told me that she had watched chickens on her grandparents' farm. She told me the rooster pecked the hen on top of her head a couple of times and she could lay eggs. Obviously, a fautly biology lesson. It is a privilege to be able to witness these rare moments of nature and to capture them so well in photos is even better. |
Judging by the chickens and the geese, it seems that the pecking on the head is a mandatory part of the whole process...so perhaps as kids you weren't all that wrong after all!

The geese were certainly successful in their efforts...on July 11th, they brought no fewer than TWELVE tiny goslings to the river...you can see them here:

Great goose news! I feel sad about the plovers though. When I was at Lake Naivasha I was upsetting so many plovers. They just wouldn’t believe that I had no interest in taking their eggs.
