Fodor's Expert Review El Brujo

Magdalena de Cao Archaeological Site/Ruins

About 6 km (4 miles) from town lie the three huacas of El Brujo: La Huaca Prieta, Huaca Vieja, and Huaca Rajada. The Huaca Vieja in particular has drawn considerable interest due to the 2006 discovery of the well-preserved 1,600-year-old mummy, the Lady of Cao. The discovery of the tattooed Mochica ruler has been compared to the discovery of King Tut's tomb in Egypt, as it completely turned notions of power in pre-Colombian Peru upside down. Her tattoos even suggest that she had the ability to predict supernatural events. You can see her remains, as well as other artifacts found during the ongoing excavations, in the small site museum. The other two huacas are still not fully excavated, but the entrance fee covers all three, and they are a short walk from each other. Guides can be hired at the entrance for a small fee.
