Bus Travel

Bus travel in Colombia is improving; intercity routes are covered by quality buses running at all hours, although drivers still push their buses too fast along the often hair-raising mountain roads. Expreso Bolivariano is the standout luxury bus company that covers most national routes; Flota La Magdalena is a good second option. Although the buses are comfortable and quite safe, stick to shorter trips. Cross-country journeys are arduous and, needless to say, quite time-consuming. Budget airlines can be quite competitive, particularly during low season, and if you book online well in advance. Remember to keep all your valuables with you on the bus, preferably beneath your feet rather than in the overhead compartment, and be vigilant at bus stations. Buses often stop at police checkpoints, so have your ID close by or suffer the unpleasant consequences. In order to ensure the most comfortable journey, ask to see a photo of the type of bus you may end up taking and request seats on the bottom level, which sways less then the top level. Always aim for any preferencial service, which includes food breaks, air-conditioning, reclining seats, and often, the delights of a poor B movie.
