Salamina, Colombia

About two hours drive north of Manizales, Salamina is part of the Colombian Network of Heritage Towns. In 1982, it was declared a National Monument because of its well-preserved architecture, characteristic of the 19th century Antioquian Colonization. This distinct style can be seen throughout the countryside: walls made of bamboo and packed clay; wooden balconies; and brightly painted doors and accents, typically red or tones of green. The journey to Salamina takes you deep into the coffee growing heart of Caldas; the curvy roads are well maintained, and the scenery is truly breathtaking.

Transport is easily arranged at the Manizales bus terminal, with regular buses or shared taxis. If you go, stay at La Casa de Lola Garcia www.lacasadelolagarcia.com, a superb little boutique hotel two blocks from the plaza.
