Fodor's Review

Enjoy a slice of history along with your afternoon snack. This downtown restaurant said to be the oldest in the city has been serving up seafood to hungry cariocas since 1884. The simple blue-and-white facade of its pretty colonial building harks back to that time, as do the uniforms of the attentive waiters who show you to your seats. For a real taste of culinary history, order the Sopa Leáo Veloso—this fortifying Brazilian soup was created in honor of the Brazilian ambassador. An adaptation of the French seafood broth, bouillabaisse marselhesacombines every type of seafood imaginable, along with onion, garlic, and herbs. It's now a staple on menus across Rio de Janeiro State, but Minho still serves up the best version.
