FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Located almost on the border between Copacabana and Ipanema, the Fairmont Copacabana is housed in a historic building that has hosted many other luxury hotel brands in the past. As soon as you enter the premises, guests are immediately made to feel special by the quality of service provided. Also take some time to check their activities for guests, especially by the beach.

  • Quality of service

Cons

  • Location can be crowded in some periods of the year

THE BEST HOTEL IN COPACABANA

Hilton Copacabana

$$$$ | Av. Atlântica 1020, Rio de Janeiro, 22010000, Brazil

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

With 360° views from the tallest building on Copacabana Beach, since 2017 the Hilton Copacabana has been one of the largest Hilton properties in the region and the company's 100th hotel in Latin America. The hotel offers comfort, versatility, and an unforgettable experience for guests and pets who want to experience the Rio lifestyle. Most of the rooms have sea views, and the hotel offers two outdoor pools, beach service, the Anna Pegova spa, 24-hour gym, restaurants, and a rooftop with views of the city's main tourist attractions.

Pros

  • Rooftop view to all Copacabana beach
  • Walking distance to a quieter beach
  • Notable breakfast

Cons

  • Not walking distance to subway
  • Can be noisy
  • Rooms are slightly dated

Hotel Emiliano

$$$$ | Av. Atlântica 3804, Rio de Janeiro, 22070-001, Brazil Fodor's Choice

When this strikingly chic beachfront hotel opened, it quietly raised the bar in Rio’s hospitality scene with a level of attentiveness unmatched across the city. While its location at Posto 5 makes it ideal for exploring both Copacabana and Ipanema, you’d be forgiven from straying no further than the idyllic rooftop infinity pool, first-rate spa, trendy walled-garden restaurant, and light-filled spacious suites where private butlers care for every comfort.

Pros

  • Impeccable design
  • Personalized service includes room butlers
  • Wonderful spa and great gym

Cons

  • Copacabana location is less sophisticated than Ipanema
  • Striking exterior can be misleading to the level of luxury inside
  • Bathrooms sacrifice some functionality in the name of design

Belmond Copacabana Palace

$$$$ | Av. Atlântica 1702, Rio de Janeiro, 22021–001, Brazil

Built in 1923 for the visiting king of Belgium and inspired by Nice's Negresco and Cannes's Carlton, Copacabana Palace was the first luxury hotel in South America, and it's still one of the top hotels on the continent. Marlene Dietrich, Robert DeNiro, Princess Diana, Mick Jagger, and the Obamas are among the many famous to have stayed here. The hotel's neoclassical facade is beautifully maintained and remains a glimmering white. Inside you can find one of the city's largest and most attractive swimming pools. The hotel's restaurants are stellar, too—the elegant Cipriani is rated among the city's best for its Northern Italian cuisine, while the unlimited Sunday brunch, served in the less formal Pergula restaurant by the pool, is legendary. The pan-Asian restaurant Mee has met with critical acclaim in the culinary press. The interior of the hotel is as regal and immaculate as its facade, and the look is cool, elegant, and luxurious—from the marble reception desk to the immaculately attired bellboys and the luxury spa. Rooms are individually appointed, with period furniture and original artworks. Ocean-view rooms are more expensive than those at the back, whose view of the Copacabana streets somewhat detracts from the glamorous atmosphere, and the nightlife in this district is less sophisticated than neighboring Ipanema and Leblon, so you're likely to find yourself taking nightly cab rides.

Pros

  • Historic landmark
  • Front-facing rooms have spectacular ocean views
  • Great on-site restaurants

Cons

  • Area is a little seedy at night
  • Need to take taxis to best bars and restaurants
  • "city view" rooms have poor views of backstreets

JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro

$$$$ | Av. Atlântica 2600, Rio de Janeiro, 22041–001, Brazil

You could be walking into a Marriott anywhere in the world, which is a comfort for some and a curse for others. Expect spotlessly clean rooms and public areas, an efficient English-speaking staff, and modern (and expensive) services and facilities. Despite the enormous lobby, rooms here are smaller than at most Marriott hotels, but some rooms have views of Avenida Atlântica and Copacabana. The location—the front door spits you out onto Copacabana Beach—can't be beat.

Pros

  • Close to beach
  • Efficient service
  • Bountiful breakfast

Cons

  • Expensive extras like Wi-Fi
  • Front-facing rooms can be noisy
  • Tired swimming pool area
