Fodor's Expert Review Gurda Tango Boutique Hotel

Defensa 1521, Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, 1413, Argentina

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

In the heart of San Telmo, the Gurda will give you a glimpse of what life was like at the turn of the 19th century. Seven rooms line the long, open-air hallway with exposed brick, green plants, and bamboo sticks. Each room is named after something or someone decidedly Argentine—Borges, Malbec, Patagonia—and filled complete with decorations to match. (In the Borges room you find copies of his books and a colorful portrait.) The rooms are rustic and basic, but extremely charming.

PROS

  • the young, friendly staff can organize wine tastings with local sommeliers and tango lessons

CONS

  • the entrance is right on a busy street full of buses
  • the restaurant and bar are noisy
