Fodor's Expert Review Axel Hotel Buenos Aires
Venezuela 649, Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, 1095, Argentina
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Billed as Latin America's first gay hotel, the Axel Hotel Buenos Aires is modeled after the successful original hotel in Barcelona. The new building combines glass, wood, and water to an impressive effect, with lots of open spaces and fresh air. The floors of the common areas are lined with Mac computers and a colorful mosaic tiling, a nod to the rainbow pride flag. The rooms are slick, modern, and bright, and some equipped with hydro-massage tubs and leather-lined closets. The Axel also has what must be Buenos Aires' first transparent elevated pool, located on the top floor, and visible from all points below. Although the clientele and staff are predominantly homosexual men, the hotel vehemently promotes itself as "hetero-friendly."
- gigantic outside pool, bar, and deck area offer an upbeat and festive environment, a respite from the chaotic city streets
- rooms are small and very close together
- the doors and balconies practically sit on top of each other, so privacy is at a minimum
