The mountains around Dubois attracted explorers as early as 1811, when members of the Wilson Price Hunt party crossed through the region en route to Fort Astoria in Oregon. These high peaks still attract folks who like to hike, climb, ride horses, camp, and experience wilderness. The largest concentration of free-ranging bighorn sheep in the country—more than 1,400—lives here, roaming the high country in summer and wintering just above town on Whiskey Mountain.
South and east of Grand Teton and Yellowstone, Dubois is the least well-known of the gateway communities to the parks, but this town of 1,000 provides all the services a visitor in Jackson or Cody might need. You can still get a room during the peak summer season without making a reservation months in advance, although it’s a good idea to call a week or so before you arrive.
