Fodor's Expert Review The Liaison Capitol Hill, An Affinia Hotel

415 New Jersey Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20001, United States See on Map Fodor's Choice

DC’s cool side shows in this Capitol Hill hotel, from the sleek lobby to stylish rooms to swank rooftop bar and pool (complete with rentable cabanas). Oh, and its location near the US Capitol, with the National Mall’s museums and monuments an easy stroll away, is a definite plus as well.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There’s a nightly resort fee for internet, in-room coffee and newspaper.

Updated, sleek guest rooms are the ultimate masculine hideaway, with a black leather quilted headboard, glass-top desk and ergonomic chair, brushed stainless-steel accents, and tones of gray, indigo blue, tan, and a dash of red. Modern lighting sets the mood.

Ask for a high floor.

Bathrooms are on the small side, with gleaming subway tiles, colorful wallpaper, tub/shower combo, and Gilchrist & Soames "Sprout Out" bath products

Cool lobby vibes come from sleek European sectionals, couture lounge chairs, cocktail tables, and contemporary, large-size character portraits of powerful world leaders.

The seasonal rooftop pool is one of the city's go-to destinations for fun in the sun.

In-room spa services are available.

The 24-hour fitness center has cardio equipment, free weights, and a stretching area.

A two-time James-Beard-award-winning chef (and Oprah Winfrey's former personal chef) is at the helm of Art and Soul's southern-inspired cuisine, served in a contemporary setting; its patio is sublime in warmer months, offering a separate pooch menu.

ArtBar is the lobby lounge serving up specialty cocktails. And don't forget the seasonal rooftop bar beside the pool for the epitome of summer lounging.

Getting Around

The Liaison Capitol Hill is located just two blocks from Union Station, where you can catch the metro to farther-flung destinations within the city. The National Mall and U.S. Capitol are an easy walk away. Parking is expensive and DC traffic can be horrendous; it's advisable to leave your car behind.

Bistro Cacao (13-minute walk) offers a bistro French menu amid eclectic antiques and curtained booths. For a different take on the French experience, a James Beard award-winning chef prepares innovative takes on French classics at Bistro Bis (3-minute walk), a Hill favorite where politicos return again and again.

The Dubliner (5-minute walk) has been serving up Irish tipple since 1974. Denson Liquor Bar (6-minute walk) serves old-school drinks in an art deco setting.

DC isn't really your cool pool scene sort of place, but you'll find it here, at the Liaison Capitol Hill's recently renovated rooftop pool. You can reserve a cabana and unwind all day in what's got to be the most relaxing spot in the city. Coconut-infused-rum cocktails round out the summer dream.
