Fodor's Expert Review JW Marriott

1331 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20004, United States See on Map

Right in the midst of DC’s hustle and bustle, the recently renovated JW Marriott stands near the White House and National Mall, offering fabulous views over the nation’s capital from its upper rooms. Stylish guest rooms, a casual restaurant and cocktail lounge, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and tons of meeting spaces make the JW Marriott a mover-and-shaker’s go-to—though leisure travelers appreciate the strategic location to many of DC’s best sights.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The elevator system is unusual, to say the least. Make sure you get the specifics from the front desk.

room

The contemporary, recently renovated guest rooms have luxury bed linens, work desk with comfortable chair, and a soothing deep chocolate, charcoal, and pearl gray palette accented with pink and chrome. South-facing rooms on the upper floors have amazing views of the White House and Washington Monument. A love seat in the King rooms transforms into a single bed.

Ask for a corner room, with two walls of windows.

bathroom

Bathrooms are smallish but newly renovated, with illuminated mirrors, spa-like showers, and custom bath amenities from Aromatherapy Associates (though still have tubs).

lobby

The long, open, rectangular lobby, with chandeliers, four check-in desks, and escalators going to and fro, is a bustling place filled with families, business colleagues, and tourists alike. An in-lobby Starbucks ensures you never have to be without caffeine.

pool

Kids love the indoor pool, though it’s fairly standard in a closed-in space, without views.

spa

There is no spa.

gym

The well-equipped fitness center has cardio equipment and weights.

dining

Avenue Grill is laid-back American, specializing in steaks, BBQ, and sandwiches.

drinking

1331 Lounge has cocktails and small bites, and a popular happy hour. It’s said to be the birthplace of the Rickey.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located on Pennsylvania Avenue just a block from the White House, the JW Marriott is perfectly located near DC’s most famous museums and monuments, as well as theaters, restaurants, and bars. Metro is the best mode of transport, with the Metro Center station just 2 blocks away.

Restaurants

Occidental Grill & Seafood (2-minute walk) is a longtime local favorite (since circa 1906) for high-end surf ‘n’ turf; many of the politicians it has hosted through the years are captured in portraits on the wall. If you’re looking for something a little less extravagant, The Hamilton (2-minute walk) is a Clydes Group enterprise offering creative takes on American cuisine; live music takes place in the state-of-the-art venue downstairs.

Bars

A DC tradition since 1856, the Old Ebbitt Grill (5-minute walk) is full of historic charm; Teddy Roosevelt allegedly bagged some of the animal heads over the Main Bar. Keep an eye out for politicos. If you’re dying to show off your new Manolos, the rooftop POV bar at nearby W Washington (3-minute walk) is the place to go; its views over the Mall’s world-famous monuments and the White House are Instagram worthy.

WHY WE LIKE IT

We know we'll get a Marriott quality stay, which is the main reason to book here. What's unexpected are the simply stunning views from some of the upper rooms looking out over downtown DC to the Washington Monument.
