D.C. Food Trucks
The nation's capital loves celebrity chefs and pricey bistros, but its latest romance is both affordable and accessible: food trucks. The mobile-food rush reached its peak several years ago when local brick-and-mortar restaurateurs attempted to fight the trucks' appeal by passing an ordinance to keep them from staying too long in one place. That battle continues, but visitors keen to try the best D.C. trucks can always take advantage of Twitter. Even nonmembers of the networking site are free to visit the trucks' pages to track their locations—and in many cases, check out menus to see whether chicken vindaloo or red-velvet cupcakes are on the docket at these favorite spots.
Fojol Brothers (twitter.com/fojolbros) calls itself a "traveling culinary carnival"—and with good reason. The quartet of cooks behind its African-Indian fusion eats are fond of fake mustaches that complete their masquerade as chefs from mythical Benethopia and Merlindia. But there's nothing faux about the fragrant flavors of their buttered chicken, berbere lentils, and pumpkin stews.
Red Hook Lobster Pound (twitter.com/lobstertruckdc) is the Washington outpost of a popular Brooklyn, New York, spot that purveys rolls filled with überfresh shellfish from Maine (tossed with light mayo) and Connecticut (kissed by creamy butter) variations. Add a decadent chocolate whoopie pie for dessert, and try the equally good shrimp roll for $7 less.
Hula Girl (twitter.com/hulagirltruck) is a celebration of all things Hawaiian, from the salty and quirky tang of Spam musubi, the iconic fried meat wrapped in seafood, to the crunchy, refreshing sesame-tinged salad topped with fresh teriyaki steak.
