Fodor's Review

If you're very lucky, you might get to catch this geyser in action. It erupts every 14 to 16 hours for sometimes as long as 30 minutes. The water can shoot up as high as 80 to 100 feet, but hasn't for many years. Researchers studyng the cold-water geyser believe it's been partially plugged by people throwing rocks into the hole to force the geyser to erupt. On the banks of the Green River, 10 miles south of town, you'll get a good taste of the backcountry on a bumpy, dirt road. Mineral deposits have created a dramatic orange terrace surrounding the eruption site. The staff at the Green River Information Center, which is in the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, can provide detailed directions and updated road conditions.
