While working at the Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, pharmacist Dr. Charles Alderton was experimenting with some chemicals and accidentally invented the soft drink he later called Dr Pepper. The drugstore is gone, but the original bottling plant remains open as a museum. Interesting exhibits and films offer a look at some early promotional materials as well as the manufacturing process. Much of the second floor is devoted to promotional materials tracing its history. After a look through the museum, most travelers make their last stop the re-creation of the Old Corner Drug Store fountain for an ice-cream soda or (what else?) a Dr Pepper.
Armstrong-Browning Library. Housing the world's largest collection of books, letters, and manuscripts of Victorian poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, this gem on the Baylor University campus is world-renowned. The facility also contains a substantial collection of primary and secondary materials relating to the Victorian era. It's a working research library but is open for tours (guided tours are available depending on docent availability). It's on the eastern edge of campus.
Baylor University. The oldest institution of higher learning in the state of Texas, Baylor University is also the oldest Baptist university in the world. The 450-acre, tree-covered campus features the Bear Habitat, where Baylor's two live North American black bear mascots live; the Martin Museum of Art, which rotates exhibits throughout the year; and a new memorial to the Immortal 10, a group of Baylor students who died when their bus collided with a train in Round Rock while en route to a basketball game in Austin in 1927.
Sixteen themed discovery rooms encourage hands-on learning for visitors of all ages. Rooms are devoted to vertebrates and invertebrates, communication, health, American Indians, optics and sound, water and bubbles, energy, simple machines, and other subjects. The Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village, a 15-building complex adjacent to the Mayborn, gives visitors a view of Texas life from the early 20th century.
This is the official museum and hall of fame of the Texas Rangers, the state's storied law-enforcement agency. Exhibits focus on the history of and equipment used by the Rangers throughout the years. Shotguns belonging to Bonnie and Clyde are here as well.
Paying homage to many legendary Texas sports figures, this museum also has areas devoted to tennis, high-school basketball, and high school football. Interactivity abounds as guests can watch clips of important Texas sports moments in the Tom Landry Theater, compare hand and shoe sizes to larger-than-life NBA players, and sing along to college fight songs.
