Austin’s Uchiko might have started out as the "little brother” of Chef Tyson Cole’s now famed Uchi restaurant, but four years later the contemporary Japanese fusion eatery has become an icon in its own right. Led by the James Beard Award-winning Cole, Uchiko impresses with dishes like Jar Jar Duck, served in a mason jar and opened tableside to release a rosemary smoke fog that reveals confited and smoked duck amid cracklings, kumquats, and pickled endives. The swanky ambiance, starting curbside with complimentary valet, delivers a perfect date night. Plus, the shareable small plates make for a delightfully playful experience. Especially when left up to the experts with the daily omakase (“I trust the chef") menu. Be sure to request their signature brussel sprouts with sweet Thai chili sauce. And enjoy some added value with the social hour menu, offered daily from 5–6:30 pm, when selected plates, sakes, and beer are just $3–$6.
