Fodor's Expert Review Counter Café
Fans of Austin’s iconic Counter Café got a lot of good news this year, when the beloved (but tragically tiny) diner on North Lamar unveiled this new eastside location, with double the square footage and an extended menu with retired signatures like their Polenta fried oysters. The new mid-century style location looks almost identical, from the wooden countertops and blackboard of daily specials, to the line of expert short order chefs knocking out the same (albeit slightly extended) menu of classic breakfast and lunch dishes. Patrons can find the same signatures: crab cake benedict, enormous pancakes, quail and eggs, and succulent grass-fed burgers. The original locale is still a hot spot, but owners have been hinting at a potential move if their lease isn’t renewed.
