Fodor's Expert Review Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark

4140 Governors Row, Austin, Texas, 78744, United States See on Map

Lauren Modery

This elegant 14-story hotel, near the tangled intersection of I–35 and US 290, earns high marks for value, but feels removed from the city, despite being only three miles from downtown. The property has a resort air, with a huge marbled lobby; full-service restaurant (albeit overpriced); indoor-outdoor heated pool; large exercise room, whirlpool, and sauna; and modest spa. Rooms are decorated with classic restraint, which some might find stuffy. Upper floors have views of the downtown skyline. A city bus stop is within walking distance; a free shuttle services the airport.

room

This large hotel has 312 rooms ranging in size from 245-785 square feet. They look a little outdated with their oversized wooden bed frames, loud carpeting and textured ceiling and walls. However, the large beds are comfy and the room offers plenty of space. Premiere rooms and suites feature a balcony, kitchenette and one or two bedrooms.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Keep your kids busy with Omni’s Kids Crew program. Each kid receives a backpack filled with stickers, crayons, games and binoculars.

bathroom

Neutral tones and granite countertops. Florescent lights make for some pretty harsh lighting, but all your needs are covered here.

lobby

Straight out of 1980, the lobby borderlines on kitsch. Lots of ornate wooden fixtures, plants and intense carpet patterns. However, the front desk is friendly, and the pool, spa, lounge and restaurant are just a few steps away.

pool

The large indoor/outdoor pool located near the lobby is open year-round. Also featured is a whirlpool and sauna. Hours are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and in the summer you can enjoy food and drinks poolside.

There is a small but functional 24/7 gym.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located where Interstate 35 and Highway 290 meets means walking is not optimal, but renting a car or scheduling a taxi or Uber will quickly get you to anywhere in the city.

Restaurants

An old favorite in Austin, convenient store-turned-Indian eatery Whip In (4-minute drive) is a great spot to try craft beers, eat a curry bowl and catch some live music. For a quick and light lunch, check out Spokesman (4- minute drive), located in an old warehouse. The ultra-hip joint offers sandwiches, salads, coffee, and beer.

Bars

South Austin is becoming a hot spot for breweries and there are two located nearby—Skull Mexchanix Brewing (2-minute drive) and St. Elmo Brewing Company (4-minute drive). Both breweries are located in large warehouses and offer great spots for hanging with friends and trying new craft beers.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The awkward location and outdated décor makes this a less competitive option, but what this hotel has going for it is the price. If you want an above average sleeping experience with above average amenities this place works. Just know that you can’t really walk to anything.
