Custer and Crazy Horse Memorial

About 30 miles north of Hot Springs is the town of Custer, the Mother City of the Black Hills. Near here, George Armstrong Custer and his expedition first discovered gold in 1874, leading to the gold rush of 1875 and '76. Just north sits Crazy Horse Memorial, a carving of an Oglala Lakota warrior that has been in progress since 1948.
