When to Go

The Grand Strand was developed as a summer resort, and with its gorgeous beaches, flowering tropical plants, palmetto trees, and warm weather, it continues to shine during the height of the summer season. That said, the fall and spring shoulder seasons may be even better. Warm temperatures allow for beach activities, but the humidity drops, the crowds thin, and the heat of summer passes.

Winter—November through February—isn't usually considered a time to visit the beach, but the region can be quite pleasant. There are certainly cold days, but for the most part, golfers, tennis players, and other outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy their pursuits during these months—at rock-bottom prices.

From mid- to late May, much of the Grand Strand is inhabited by bikers in town for Myrtle Beach Bike Week and the Atlantic Beach BikeFest. Traffic and noise problems are common, and hotel space is scarce.
