Fodor's Expert Review McLeod Plantation Historic Site

Greater Charleston Fodor's Choice
Directly across the Ashley River from downtown Charleston, on James Island, this 37-acre site is the only former plantation in the area where the visitor experience is focused on the lives of the enslaved people who toiled here, encouraging visitors to compare the row of well-preserved slave quarters with the large plantation house. Guided and self-led tours are organized around a Transition to Freedom program that imagines what life was like for the people working on the cotton plantation and the ramifications these injustices still have on society today.
