Fodor's Expert Review Norman Bird Sanctuary

Newport Nature Preserve/Wildlife Refuge

Stroll through the woods or hike to the top of Hanging Rock for a spectacular view at this 325-acre sanctuary for more than 300 species of birds, plus deer, foxes, mink, turtles, and rabbits. The sanctuary has about 7 miles of trails. A 19th-century barn holds the visitor center, whose wildlife and ecosystem exhibits document Rhode Island's natural history. The raucous dawn chorus of birdsong in the spring is one of the great wildlife experiences in Rhode Island.
