Fodor's Expert Review Fort Adams State Park

Newport Beach

The largest coastal fortification in the United States can be found at this park, which hosts Newport's folk and jazz festivals and sailing events like the Volvo Ocean Race. From mid-May through mid-October, the nonprofit Fort Adams Trust offers daily tours of the fort, where soldiers lived from 1824 to 1950. Tours take in the fort's overlooks and tunnels, as well as its impressive walls. The views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay are exquisite. The fort is reputed to be haunted and is often open for spooky ghost-hunting tours in the days leading up to Halloween.
