Fodor's Expert Review Mohegan Bluffs

Block Island Beach
Free Fodor's Choice

The dramatic 200-foot cliffs along Mohegan Trail, one of the island's top sights, offer a craggy beauty not found anywhere else in New England. On a clear day you can see all the way to Montauk Point on Long Island. The bluffs can be enjoyed from street level, but to access the beach below requires a descending a steep set of more than 100 stairs that lead almost to the bottom. Because of erosion, you have to scramble down the rock-strewn final yards to reach the beach. It is pebbly at the base of the stairs but sandy in the cove to the west, with wave action that attracts surfers. Wear walking shoes, and don't attempt the descent unless you're in reasonably good shape.
