Gemmell's

Accomplished chef Byron Gemmell's moderately priced bistro offers a taste of France in the midst of a SoCal harbor. In a laid-back but romantic setting, you can begin with escargots or French onion soup before moving on to sand dabs in white wine or roasted duck in a seductive rum-banana liquor reduction. Finish with a soufflé—either classic chocolate or Grand Marnier. The wine list includes some reasonably priced Bordeaux. Sunday brunch is a four-course meal with free flowing champagne for $45.

Imagine a restaurant serving buttery sushi and sashimi, lamb lettuce wraps, thai mussels simmered in Woodpecker cider, and a classic Hawaiian pizza under one roof. Geno's Chowder & Sandwich Shop

$$

It's hard to find a more alluring setting for lobster in the rough than this old-school seafood shack with seating on two decks lined with lobster traps, overlooking the Piscataqua River, Peirce Island, and the Colonial houses of northeastern Portsmouth. Since 1965, Geno's has specialized in big portions of fresh-caught lobster and crab, plus oyster stew, BLTs, bacon cheeseburgers, and a daily rotation of tempting desserts. Try the blueberry pie when it's available. There's a small but well-selected wine and beer list, too.

Geno's Steaks

$ | East Passyunk

Geno’s, open since 1966, is a fresh-faced upstart compared with neighboring rival Pat’s, which has been slinging steaks since 1930. That gulf manifests itself visually in the contrast between Pat's understated aesthetic and Geno's over-the-top use of neon, which burns so brightly astronauts can probably see it from space, and the fact that Geno's meat is sliced, not chopped. Some aficionados claim that the two serve wildly dissimilar products; others just don't get it, but it's always fun to taste-test, as the buses full of tourists who frequently make their way down this way can attest.
