Federal Donuts

$ South Philadelphia Café

Fodor’s Expert Review

Haters snickered when the crew from Zahav opened a doughnut–and–fried-chicken shop on an obscure corner of residential Pennsport in 2011. They’re still eating their words—and hopefully, the fantastic Korean-style bird dusted in Israeli za’atar, hands-down the city’s best fried chicken. FedNuts, as locals affectionately call it, has since expanded into other neighborhoods, but the snug South Philly original remains the most charming with its foldout bar stools and hipster-meets-Mummer crowd. On the doughnut front, the made-each-morning “Fancies” entice with flavors like Chocolate Eclair and Grapefruit Brulee, but the “Hot Fresh” ones rolled warm in lavender and cinnamon sugars are almost always more satisfying.
