Alyssa Pinsker

Hotel Monaco offers magic, style and LEED certification in the heart of Philly's historic center, along with the beloved perks of the Kimpton brand: complimentary evening wine hours, free bikes and yoga mats, fitness classes, and pet-friendly rooms. Rooms mix local period influences (marble desks with carved bases, mirrored end tables) with bold, geometric pattern carpets, shawl-collared “Rocky” style knit grey bathrobes, cable/phone in each standard room, LCD TVs, Frette linens, iHome stations, and—a nod to Ben Franklin—kites. Higher categories like Spa Rooms and Suites may also have vintage soaking tubs. Guests get free entry to the trendy rooftop Stratus bar and can dine at the Red Owl Tavern, an upscale-comfort food favorite.

Utilize the “Forgot It? We’ve Got It!” for forgotten essentials like curling irons, sewing kits, collar stays, and fashion tape at no cost

room

Rooms are decorated in a whimsical explorer style of old meets new with nods to Philadelphia's liberty bell, the mummers and Benjamin Franklin in the wallpaper and Founding Father quoted pillows. Apartment style touches like books, shells and urns make the rooms even more eccentric and cozy. King size or queen size Kimptom mattresses have 300 count Frette linens and a large work area each in a unique style with a charging station.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Fill your bottle with filtered water in the lobby because rooms provide no gratis H20, but Voss is available for $8 a bottle. At the manager's discretion, they may send you free water up from the lobby.

bathroom

Large bathrooms have luxury Atelier Bloem amenities, a walk in stand up glass shower, vintage soaking tub or standard tub and whimsical wallpaper with bold prints and textures. Marble vanity with lots of equipment available upon request.

lobby

Walking into red curtains opens to a Wes Anderson dream of vintage world explorer mixed with the fantastical. A Swarovski crystal ship serves as a chandelier. Once in the lobby, whimsical adventure and features nods to all different cultures and clashes that work such as framed, Native American inspired beadwork and oversized Japanese calligraphy bushes behind the front desk. The centerpiece fireplace burns 365 days a year.

spa

No spa on the property but you can schedule in-room spa services through Relax & Rejuvenate via an 800 number or request online.

IHG Rewards members get $30 off spa services.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The theme and decor cannot be topped. Though it may classify as hipster, it's whimsy, world-explorer collection and attention to detail create a truly one of a kind experience like sleeping in a movie version of a charmed hotel. The clash of prints in one room that somehow unifies is enough for a design masterpiece. Kimpton's famous amenities are a draw as well.
