Fodor's Expert Review John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
The Mill Grove Audubon Center was the first American home of Haitian-born artist and naturalist John James Audubon (1785–1851). Built in 1762, the house is now a museum displaying the major works of this renowned American naturalist, including his paintings of birds and wildlife, and an original copy of his massive Birds of America. The attic has been restored to a studio and taxidermy room. The National Audubon Society, which runs the museum, has restored these treasures and added others. Mill Grove, 2 miles north of Valley Forge National Historical Park is within the 175-acre Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, which has 5 miles of marked walking trails with scenic views of Perkiomen Creek that were once trod by Audubon himself.
