Fodor's Review

Back in the early 1970s, Division Street (or "Southeast Division," as many locals call it) was earmarked for condemnation as part of a proposed—and thankfully never built—freeway that would have connected Downtown to Mt. Hood. For many years, this street sat forlornly, just a long stretch of modest buildings and empty lots. These days, Southeast Division—no longer threatened with condemnation—is one of the hottest restaurant rows in the city, perhaps even the Western United States, and sleek three- and four-story contemporary condos and apartments are popping up like dandelions. If culinary tourism is your thing, head to the 10 blocks of Southeast Division from about 30th to 39th avenues, where you'll find such darlings of the culinary scene as Pok Pok, Ava Gene's, American Local, an outpost of Salt & Straw ice cream, Little T bakery, Lauretta Jean's, and several others. The main draw here is mostly food-and-drink related; there are several great bars, and the excellent SE

Wine Collective urban winery. You'll also find a smattering of other noteworthy restaurants and bars extending all the way to 12th Avenue to the west, and 50th Avenue to the east. As well as "Division" and "Southeast Division," you may hear some locals refer to the neighborhood as "Clinton/Division," referring to Clinton Street, a block south of Division, where you will find lovely early- to mid-20th-century bungalows and houses and a few noteworthy eateries (Broder, La Moule). Clinton Street was once the destination here, but over the past decade, the allure has grown to encompass the entire Southeast Division area. Bus 4 runs crosses the Hawthorne Bridge from Downtown and continues along Division Street; there's also plenty of free street parking in the neighborhood.
