Fodor's Expert Review Ruby Jewel

$ Downtown Café

Portland's other critically acclaimed ice-cream shop (Salt & Straw tends to get far more attention), Ruby Jewel started out in 2004 with sinfully decadent ice-cream sandwiches in unusual flavors, such as lemon cookie with honey-lavender ice cream and cinnamon-chocolate cookie stuffed with espresso ice cream. These are still big sellers—stop by the Ruby Jewel stand at Saturday's Portland Farmers Market at PSU, where you'll also find a few special seasonal flavors of the ice-cream sandwiches. Ruby Jewel's two cafés, one in downtown's West End and the original on North Mississippi, also dole out cones and dishes of ice cream with flavors like caramel with salted dark chocolate and chèvre with Pinot-grape swirl.
