Fodor's Expert Review Blue Star Donuts
The lines outside much-hyped competitor Voodoo Doughnut are longer, but that doesn't mean you should bypass a chance to sample the creative confections at this handsome, light-filled doughnut shop on the street level of a glassy condo tower in the West End. Part of Micah Camden's nouvelle–fast-food empire (that includes Little Big Burger and Boxer Ramen), Blue Star opens at 7 or 8 each morning and remains open until that day's fresh-baked stock of delicious doughnuts is sold out. Flavors change regularly, but often include blueberry-bourbon-basil, bacon-maple, and Valrhona chocolate crunch with a Boston-cream-style filling. Stumptown coffee is served, too. If you have time for just one Portland doughnut shop, choose this one; if possible, though, try them both. Additional locations can be found in Hawthorne, Nob Hill, and North Mississippi (as well as L.A. and Tokyo).
