Fodor's Expert Review Harrah's Casino
Owned by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, Harrah's Casino has live blackjack, roulette, craps, and poker games along with some 5,000 electronic gaming machines in a huge casino the size of more than three football fields. Alcohol is available in the casino and its restaurants and bars (the rest of the Cherokee Indian Reservation is dry). Smoking is allowed in most of the casino, but restaurants and some public areas are smoke-free. Big-name stars such as Chris Rock, Willie Nelson, and Reba McEntire provide entertainment at the casino's 3,000-seat theater. Whatever one thinks of gambling, the highly successful casino has made a big impact on the 13,000 members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee; recently, each member of the tribe received $11,700 from casino profits. In 2016, the tribe opened a second, $140 million casino and 300-room hotel complex about an hour west of Cherokee in Murphy, North Carolina.
