Fodor's Expert Review Wright Brothers National Memorial

Northern Beaches Museum/Gallery Fodor's Choice

One of the most popular photo sites on the Outer Banks, 5 miles south of Kitty Hawk, this 60-foot granite airplane's tail stands as a tribute to Wilbur and Orville Wright, two bicycle mechanics from Ohio who took to the air here on December 17, 1903. A sculptured replica of their Wright Flyer helps you to experience the historic day humans first made powered flight. Informative talks by National Park Service rangers also help bring the event to life. The main museum, visitor center, and exhibits are undergoing a total restoration and are not expected to reopen until late 2018. However, visitors can still tour the Memorial high atop a hill and also see the Wright Flyer sculpture. There is a temporary welcome center with an information desk and a few exhibits.
