Fodor's Review

Chico, California-based Sierra Nevada, one of the country's largest national craft breweries, opened its East Coast brewery and distribution center on a 190-acre site on the French Broad River just south of Asheville. The beautifully landscaped complex includes an excellent restaurant, tasting room, gift shop, and hiking and biking trails. You can take a self-guided tour of the facility via the Visitor Corridor, which allows views of the copper-clad brew kettles and a visit to the packaging hall and warehouse. Organized tour options include a 30-minute educational tasting; a two-hour moderate hike (with beer) of the forested property the facility sits on; and an intimate three-hour Beer Geek tour, which takes you behind the scenes in the brewing process and includes samples from the tanks in the cellar. The tours of the brewery are often heavily booked so you should reserve as far in advance as possible.
