Fodor's Expert Review Albemarle Inn

86 Edgemont Rd., Asheville, North Carolina, 28804, USA

This B&B in a 1909 Greek revival home in an upscale North Asheville residential area housed the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók in the early 1940s, when he was creating his "Asheville Concerto." You can stay in his room on the third floor, although other rooms with a private balcony overlooking lovely gardens or a working fireplace may appeal more to modern Romeos and Juliets.

PROS

  • upscale and historic
  • lovely residential neighborhood
  • excellent breakfasts

CONS

  • old-fashioned claw-foot tubs in some rooms may not appeal to all
  • not within easy walking distance of downtown
  • no elevator
