Fodor's Review

Is it the city's most creative wine bar? Or its most impressive concert space? Both, actually. Pairing killer music (Nick Lowe, Shawn Colvin, War, Los Lobos) with unique events (Klezmer Breakfast, Cheese Brunch, tours of its in-house winery, special "Vinofile" memberships, and a Twitter–wine-tasting party called Spit and Twit), the City Winery has ample room for customers with "good taste" in every sense of the term.

More Than Just Wine Tasting

My spouse and I stopped at City Winery for a drink on a Saturday evening in late September 2016. City Winery has locations in New York City (including City Winery and City Vineyard at Pier 26), Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, and Boston. The NYC SoHo branch is located on Varick Street between Spring and Vandam Streets. The SoHo City Winery is open daily for lunch and dinner, except on Saturdays, when it is open only for dinner (not lunch). Although the

SoHo location features both a bar and an entertainment venue, it closes at 11:00 pm nightly. You can make a dining reservation using the online Open Table reservation system. The founder of the NYC music venue Knitting Factory conceived City Winery. His goal was to combine his passions for wine and music by pairing the culinary and cultural experiences. The SoHo facility combines a fully functioning winery with small concerts, food and wine classes, fine dining, and private events. Sounds, smells, tastes, and views combine to create a unique experience. The property fatures three parts: the fermentation tank room (City Winery began making wine in 2008), the Barrel Room (a 30-seat restaurant within the winery complex that opened in 2011), and the event space. Besides dining and listening, at City Winery you can make your own wine, take a tour, participate in a wine tasting, and create custom wine labels. The winery makes more than ten wines on the premises, all available on tap, but you can also order from their extensive wine list of over 400 selections from most major winemaking regions of the world. “Wine Spectator” magazine recognized City Winery with a “Best of Award of Excellence” in 2010. Their tap system uses a neutral argon gas that allows City Winery to serve wine in the “greenest” manner with no need for bottles, corks, labels, or cardboard cases. Much of their wine requires no added sulfites during "kegging", and because of the inert gas, the wine is freshly preserved in stainless steel, which creates no waste from keg to glass. We visited City Winery for a drink to end our night, but we will return when we have time to enjoy some food and live music.
