Fodor's Review

Beer gardens once dotted the New York City landscape in the way that Starbucks does now, but after World War I and Prohibition, most of these outdoor drinking spots vanished. Then in 2003 came Loreley (which eventually kicked off a new beer-garden craze in the city). Don't mistake this Lower East Side hot spot for a place where geriatrics in lederhosen swing their plus-size steins of beer to polka music. Instead, there's a better-than-good chance of finding a gaggle of hipsters nursing German craft beers while bobbing their heads to the new Radiohead album and munching on plates of sausage, meatballs, or schnitzel. The space out back may be more concrete than garden, but it's a pleasure on a mild evening.
