Why We Like It

Particularly those who are enrolled in the Hyatt’s membership rewards programs, this location is well-designed, finely priced option for those loyal to the brand. For those not, and simply in need an efficient and comfortable stay in central Manhattan, this may well be a good option.

Fodor's Expert Review

Another 31st Street outpost that offers the expected Hyatt product with a dash of boutique vibes, but with personal attentive service. Hyatt Herald Square is on the small side for this hotel giant with only 122 rooms. As such it’s public spaces are designed with intent, referencing the neighborhood’s fashion and publishing history, as well as establish as a meeting place.

Room

Compact but complete, these rooms offer an array of storage and amenity features that have become standard practice for business hotels. Lots of cabinets, lots of plugs, lots of light.

Bathroom

Glass-enclosed stone-wall showers have that “spa vibe.” A contemporary sink vanity also offers storage in a spacious but otherwise standard looking bathroom.

Lobby

Reception, waiting area, coffee shop, meeting space and restaurant—the recently renovated lobby is the heart of the hotel’s social life. Contemporary lighting fixtures and color-coordinating book shelving systems are a cool design touch to the corporate-hipster vibe in here. Receptionist are also on-site concierge services whose duties also comprise of pulling espresso shots for guests.

Gym

Small with the basics, this gym is the sort to get a morning treadmill run in but not much else.

Dining

The Den, which does in fact feel like its namesake, is tucked behind the lobby and is an all-day bistro serving hotel fare that also provides in-room dining. The Den’s menu has small and big plates, and serves the sort of fresh seasonal fare that’s particularly in vogue in New York at the moment.

Drinking

The Den does serve alcohol, but the near-secret rooftop Up On 20 is a fun little find in this stretch of Herald Square. Nestled between buildings, looking right up at the Empire State Building, this rooftop bar with killer views hasn’t quite been discovered by the commuters yet—perhaps in part that it’s prices are a bit steep for the pleasure of basking in Empire’s nightly neon.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Located within the Herald Square transport hub next to N/Q/R/W and B/D/F/M lines. Penn Station with the 1/2/3 A/C/E an NJT, LIRR and PATH trains a few blocks away.

Restaurants

Walk down Broadway to find casual eateries such as The Smith (4-minutes) and Little Beet (4-minutes) for solid bite. But set your sets afield on Michelin-star “cheap” Chinese, Cafe China (6-minutes walk) except nothing about this 1920s Shanghai tearoom-inspired emporium of Szechuan peppercorns and three chili delight is in poor taste.

Bars

Koreatown for Karaoke is one of New York's greatest delights. Try Gagopa (2-minute walk) for private rooms and an extensive catalog. If that's not your thing, beautiful cocktails await in the NoMad hotel (2-minute walk).
